Theme: To Hope and Act with Creation
Fr. Neil J. Badillo, OFM, S.Th.D
SATMI, Dean of Studies
Β Β Β What do Pope Francis, the indigenous people, and St. Francis of Assisi have in common? Let’s start with the evident. They are champions of ecology. The less evident is that, by Western standards, they are neither outstanding theologians nor intellectuals. However, the indigenous peopleβs spirituality and daily living are closely entwined with the natural world. We are welcomed to this unique synodality experience by Pope Francis, whose pontificate is characterized by pastoral discourse. The profound poverty of St. Francis of Assisi, who was named the patron saint of ecology in the 1990s, is a foreshadowing of God’s Reign rather than merely romanticizing the image of a pet lover.
Indigenous people are mystics by nature; Pope Francis exemplifies the liberating mysticism; and St. Francis personified prophetic mysticism.
In his brief address to us on the eve of this creation season, Pope Francis acknowledged that protecting Mother Earth is a spiritual as well as an ethical and theological matter, as it is the burning sign of the times and the Holy Spirit’s urgent promptings.
St. Francis fraternally forewarned St. Anthony that his theological teaching of the brothers might only foster a greater love and longing for God and his lowly creatures.
Β Β Β The indigenous people were forcibly indoctrinated after being subdued by colonizers who framed them as brutish and stupid. However, postcolonial thinkers rediscovered the surviving remnants of the very deep and rich indigenous wisdom that we need to hear.
SATMI describes itself as Mindanao’s alternative theological institute. We sincerely hope to produce genuine missionaries who will hear the cries of the earth and the poor. We have three wonderful guides to help us make our theology authentically pastoral, synodal, mystical, and indigenous: Pope Francis, St. Francis, and the Indigenous people. As such, there is immense hope and action for creation in the here and now.
